Cheat sheet: how to read it

Centimeter side

1 mm2 mm3 mm4 mm5 mm6 mm7 mm8 mm9 mm01
  • Spot it: the numbers are close together, about a fingertip apart, with 10 tiny gaps between them.
  • Read it: take the last number before the arrow (cm), then count the tiny gaps (mm). 6 cm and 6 mm is 6.6 cm, or 66 mm.
  • Meters: 100 cm is 1 m. A tape keeps counting centimeters, so 137 means 137 cm, which is 1.37 m.

Inch side

1161831614516387161291658111634131678151601
  • Spot it: the numbers are farther apart (an inch is about 2Β½ cm), with 16 tiny gaps between them and lines of five different lengths.
  • Line length: the longer the line, the simpler the fraction. Longest is the half, then quarters, then eighths, and the shortest are sixteenths.
  • Read it: take the last number before the arrow, then count the tiny gaps after it. Each one is 1/16. 8/16 is the same as Β½.
  • Tapes: past 12 the inches keep counting (13, 14 …). A red box marks every foot, which is 12 inches.
